Selling a car in the Philippines is straightforward once you know the three things that decide your outcome: how the car presents, what documents you can hand over on the day, and who you sell to. This guide walks through each so you can sell quickly without leaving money on the table.
1. Get the paperwork ready before anything else
Buyers, especially dealers, pay more for a car whose papers are complete and clean. Before you list or submit your car anywhere, gather the following:
- Original Certificate of Registration (CR) and the latest Official Receipt (OR) of registration.
- Two valid government IDs of the registered owner.
- If the car was financed, the Release of Chattel Mortgage from the bank (or your latest statement of account if there is still a balance).
- Service records, warranty booklet and both sets of keys if you have them.
If the car is registered under a different name (a parent, a spouse, or a previous owner who never transferred it), fix that first. An open deed of sale from a prior owner is a common reason dealers lower their bid or walk away.
2. Present the car honestly and well
A full interior and exterior wash, a quick engine bay wipe-down and clear photos in daylight do more for your price than any accessory. Photograph all four corners, the odometer, the dashboard with the engine running, the tires and any damage. Being upfront about scratches or a past fender-bender builds trust and prevents renegotiation at the viewing.
3. Know what your car is actually worth
Online listing prices are asking prices, not selling prices. The most reliable number is what a professional buyer will pay today. A free valuation through MABcars gives you exactly that: the highest bid from certified dealers who buy your model every week. Use it as your floor even if you decide to sell privately.
4. Choose who to sell to
Dealer trade-in
Convenient if you are buying a new car from the same showroom, but the trade-in value is usually the lowest of the three routes because a single dealer sets the price with no competition.
Private buyer
Potentially the highest price, but the slowest and riskiest: you handle strangers, test drives, bouncing cheques and the LTO transfer yourself. Expect weeks of messages and no-shows.
Dealer bidding platform
Submitting once and letting multiple dealers compete usually lands between the two: close to private-sale money, with dealer-speed payment and paperwork handled for you. This is the MABcars model.
5. Close the sale safely
- Meet at a safe, public location or the dealer's office for the viewing.
- Sign a notarized Deed of Sale of Motor Vehicle only when payment is confirmed in your account (bank transfer or manager's cheque cleared).
- Hand over the original OR/CR, keys and accessories, and keep a photocopy of everything you signed.
- Follow up that the transfer of ownership is completed at the LTO so future violations and liabilities are not under your name.
The fastest sales we see are cars with complete papers, honest photos and a seller who already knows the market price. Fix those three and the rest follows.
