Two identical-looking cars can sell for six figures apart. Dealers price used cars on a short list of factors, some fixed and some you can still influence. Understanding them helps you set expectations and prepare the car so it lands at the top of its range.
What you cannot change
Brand, model and variant
Resale value in the Philippines is driven by demand and parts availability. Models such as the Toyota Vios, Fortuner, Innova and Hilux, the Mitsubishi Xpander and Montero Sport, and popular pickups hold their value because there is always a buyer waiting. Higher variants (with more safety and convenience features) recover more of their original premium than base variants.
Model year and mileage
A rough rule of thumb dealers use: the steepest drop happens in the first two to three years, after which depreciation flattens. Mileage matters relative to age; around 10,000 to 15,000 km per year reads as normal use. Well above that lowers the offer, well below it raises it, provided the service records back it up.
Accident and flood history
A repaired fender-bender with receipts is manageable. Structural repairs, airbag deployment or any sign of flood water (silt under the carpet, corroded seat rails, musty smell) cut the value sharply and can make the car unsellable to dealers. Be honest; inspectors will find it.
What you can still influence
- Documents: a car with complete OR/CR, a clean chattel mortgage release and casa service records commands a premium.
- Condition: worn tires, a weak battery, warning lights and a stained interior are each deducted at replacement cost plus labor. Fixing the cheap ones before valuation usually pays for itself.
- Originality: dealers prefer original paint and stock parts. Keep the original wheels, head unit and exhaust if you modified the car.
- Timing: demand for family MPVs and SUVs rises before the holidays and school openings; pickups sell steadily year-round.
